Coach rues ‘inconsistent’ Sri Lanka at World Cup

Sri Lanka’s coach, Chris Silverwood, pointed to inconsistency as the primary factor behind his team’s challenging campaign in the World Cup, following their seventh defeat in nine matches in the 50-overs tournament in India. After being eliminated from contention, Sri Lanka suffered a five-wicket loss to New Zealand at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Silverwood addressed the issue of inconsistency, stating, “I think inconsistency. I think it would be fair to use that word. I think we’ve played some good cricket along the way, and I think we’ll look back on certain games and rue missed opportunities, to be honest.”

He acknowledged that there were games during the campaign where seizing opportunities could have changed the team’s fortunes, but the inconsistency proved to be a significant hurdle. Silverwood emphasised that addressing this issue had been a long-term focus and would continue to be a priority.

As the top seven sides at the World Cup qualify for the Champions Trophy in 2025, along with hosts Pakistan, Sri Lanka currently sits in the ninth position with four points, sharing the same points with England, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands.

Silverwood outlined the team’s post-tournament plans, stating, “Have a good debrief, dissect what’s happened and have a look at what we can learn from this and what we can take into the next phase, the next chapter leading into the next World Cup, and how do we put things right that we got wrong this time.”

He expressed confidence in the team’s potential, emphasising that everyone is on the right path, and they will utilise the available resources to put their best foot forward in the future.
