Two spectacular goals in extra time enabled Colombo FC to edge Up Country Lions by 3 goals to 2 in the inter-club soccer encounter played for the ‘Super League’ Championship at Sugathadasa stadium yesterday.

After trailing 1-2 until full time, two goals in quick succession within a space of four minutes in injury time guided Colombo FC to notch up a thrilling win over their rivals from Nawalapitiya in a match that went right down to the wire.

Both teams came into this game in search of a much-needed win, which is a key factor in their march forward towards annexing the championship. After some scintillating performance by them, the newly appointed skipper of Up Country Lions Maridas Nitharshan made the initial scoring in the 15th minute into the first half with a well-executed goal, which intensified the need for supremacy under pressure.

They came closer to scoring on few occasions, but due to lack of inconsistency by their strikers, the chances went abegging. Just before the short whistle, Colombo lads striker Mohamed Aakib made a solo effort covering 40 metres to score one of the best goals of the tournament after receiving a pass from midfield, which took them to a 1-all scoreline at the breather.

After the turn around it was a ding-dong battle, with both teams fighting hard to increase their lead. Due to rough play on field referee Nivon Robesh was forced to intervene to calm down the situation, and a few players were shown yellow cards. Midway through the second half Mariyadas Nitharshan headed a well-timed pass to put them in the box seat, and this scoreline (2-1) remained unchanged until full time.

The pendulum swung the other way round in six minutes of extra time. It was the indefatigable Mohamed Aakib who booted his second goal in the fourth minute of extra time to make the scoreline 2-all, and by then the game was drifting towards a draw. On the brink of the full time Colombo FCs Bodric Dimitri accelerated ahead and sneaked through the rival defense to chip in a goal, which hoodwinked the entire backline, including the experienced goalkeeper Sujan Perera, who made a valiant to prevent the ball going into the net, but still failed. With this result, Up Country Lions chances of clinching the title grew slim, while Colombo FC is placed in a very healthy position of winning the championship.
