Colombo Port nominated as World’s Best Growing Port

Colombo Port has been nominated as the World’s Best Growing Port in the first quarter of 2024 by premiere global Shipping and Logistic News portal and a leading research publication in the shipping industry, Alphaliner.

This is due to its increased cargo volumes and revenue. The Port of Colombo has achieved significant progress in operational performance by recording an excellent growth rate of 23.6% in the year 2024, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping and Aviation K. D. S. Ruwanchandra said.

while various industrial actions were also taking place which were initiated by the unions.”

In 2023, the Sri Lanka Port Authority reported a profit of US$ 100 million and in the first quarter of 2024 alone, a profit of US$ 50 million has been made.

In February, the Port of Colombo witnessed an increase in transshipments by 29.1% YoY, marking the third consecutive month of growth. He also disclosed that a passenger ferry service from India operates every Friday using the newly constructed terminal building at Kankesanthurai Port for ferry operations.

“It must be said that all four terminals have contributed to these operations,  “Chairman SLPA Keith D. Bernard said. The work to develop the operational capacity of the port’s terminals is also currently underway.

“Accordingly, the construction of the ECT and the western terminal is underway and the operation of the western terminal is planned to start in February 2025.” Also, the development of the eastern terminal and the northern port is also being carried out while development works are being carried out at the ports of Trincomalee, Galle and Kankasanthuri.”

He also said that between January and June 2024, the SLPA terminals had a 23.6% increase in domestic volumes, a 15.5% increase in transshipment volumes, and a total volume gain of 17.7%.
