Colombo SLRC award medals to 500 junior members

Five hundred (500) school junior Red Cross members were awarded medals by the Colombo branch of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society.

The ceremony was held at Sri Soratha Hall, Pitipana Jayewardenepura University, of Homagama under the leadership of Senior Vice President of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Jagath Abeysinghe.

Director of Branch Development Kumari Kotalawala said that nearly two thousand students (2,000) representing forty-four schools (44) in Colombo district appeared for the preliminary examination held recently.

Kotalawala also pointed out that this was the largest number of students in the history of the Red Cross Society in this country when they appeared for the Red Cross Preliminary Examination.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has established and actively maintained Junior Red Cross Circles in nearly five hundred (500) schools across the island.

Medals were awarded to five hundred (500) students who passed the Red Cross preliminary examination and qualified for medals.

Jagath Abeysinghe said that this is the last time that five hundred medals were worn at one place and he hopes to hold the medal wearing ceremony for the rest of the children who have passed the examination in the next month.

Sri Lanka Red Cross board member Upali Sirimanna, Dr. Amila Kankanamage, Ministry of Education Co-curricular Guidance Deputy Director Nirosha Kannangara, Development Manager Manoj Rudrigu, Colombo Division Education Directors and Branch Development Director Kumari Kothalawala and members of the Colombo Branch Committee also joined.
