Colombo University holds DemARS 2023 Symposium

Colombo University’s Demography Department held its tenth annual research symposium –DemARS 2023 and the fourth International Research Conference at the New Arts Theatre, Colombo University under the patronage of Colombo University, Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor H. D. Karunaratne.

The objective of holding the symposium which was conducted under the theme ‘Population and Sustainable Development’ was to open a platform for researchers, academics and professionals to showcase their research work and disseminate cutting-edge knowledge.

During the symposium Prof. Karunaratne highlighted that the Demography Department has received approximately forty abstracts for the conference under ten sub-themes in relation to Fertility, Mortality, Migration and Urbanization, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Population Ageing etc.

During the seminar two keynote speeches were delivered by University of Hawaii at Manoa, United States of America, Economics Department, Chairman Prof. Sang-Hyop Lee under the theme ‘National Transfer Accounts (NTA) and Policy Responses’. The second seminar on ‘Intimate Relationships and Sexual Behaviour in Unmarried Sri Lankan Youth’ was done by Colombo University, Demography Department, Emeritus Professor W. Indralal De Silva.

Speaking at the event Demography Department, Head Professor Manori K. Weeratunga highlighted that the Demography Department celebrates 50 years of teaching and research this year and accordingly the research symposium was organised as one of the Golden Jubilee celebration events.

UNFPA, Sri Lanka, Acting Country Representative Sharika Cooray represented the symposium as the Guest of Honour while Professor E. L. Sunethra J. Perera made the closing remarks.
