Committee appointed to investigate patient’s death due to ‘carbon dioxide’ administration

A four-member expert committee headed by Dr. Sunil De Alwis, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Health, has been appointed to conduct a full investigation into the death of a patient allegedly after giving carbon dioxide instead of oxygen during surgery at the Colombo National Hospital.

This committee has been appointed by the Minister of Health, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana.Accordingly, the committee has planned to conduct a full investigation into the incident and submit its report to the minister within the next two or three days.The deceased is a 61-year-old unmarried woman residing in Nugegoda area.She was admitted to the hospital for a breast surgery and died after the surgery. Respiratory Hypoxia has been recorded as the cause of death, it is also reported that no unexpected or unusual event has been recorded as the cause of death.
