Committee to recommend measures against culprits

The Committee on Ways and Means Chair said that it was through this Committee that discussions were first initiated given the loss of a significant tax revenue to the Government as a result of the fraudulent use of the security tax seal (sticker) by some liquor manufacturing companies. Furthermore, recommendations on the measures to be taken against the said process was also initiated by the Committee on Ways and Means, MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

As a recently established Committee of the Parliament for the purpose of financial oversight, the Committee on Ways and Means, according to the Standing Orders of Parliament, has the powers to look into and make recommendations regarding the revenue collection mechanisms of the Sri Lanka Customs, Inland Revenue Department and Sri Lanka Excise Department institutions, along with taxation, customs duties and all matters necessary to raise additional revenue for the Government.

Whilst this was extensively examined in a number of meetings by the Committee held with the participation of the Sri Lanka Excise Department and other relevant parties, the Chair further stated that the Committee has made a number of recommendations regarding the measures to be taken by the Sri Lanka Excise Department against the alcohol manufacturing companies engaged in this illegal process and the period to take such measures.

Accordingly, the first report of the Committee on Ways and Means, which includes the measures to be taken to prevent the use of the fake security tax seal and the recommendations regarding the measures to be taken against the companies that use the security tax seal falsely, will be tabled in Parliament today (6), Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Committee Chair said.
