Comprehensive mechanism to prevent inflow of ICE drug to country – Justice Minister

Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe yesterday said that the Government and the Armed Forces have put in place a comprehensive mechanism to prevent the inflow of drugs including ICE to the country.

Minister Rajapakshe said that instead of checking school bags for drugs, the Government and the Armed Forces have implemented a comprehensive plan to prevent the inflow of the substance into Sri Lanka.Until last November, ICE was not a banned substance in Sri Lanka.

The Government is enacting legislation by making “Ice” is a prohibited substance, strengthening institutions such as the Navy and Customs and launching operations against drug smugglers.

He said that a separate High Court will be established to promptly execute the law against persons who are accused of trafficking, possession and distribution of prohibited drugs such as heroin and ICE.

Media reports that there has been an increase in the flow of ICE narcotics into Sri Lanka in the past. Dr. Rajapakshe said this while answering a question raised by a journalist whether instead of checking schoolchildren for drugs, the Government should act to stop the flow of drugs into the country.

There is no mechanism to ascertain whether the ICE drug flow into the country has increased in this country in the past or not. Because this did not become a prohibited substance until November 25, there was no way to arrest and prosecute.

“The second point is that we don’t want school children’s bags to be checked.

It is not a good message to society. Everyone says, everyone knows that this is to prevent these drugs from entering the country. Most of the drugs enter the country via the sea. The Navy plays a big role in this regard,” he said.
