Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa expressed concern over the Government’s decision to increase fuel prices at the time when the crude oil prices in the world market has come down to some extent.
He said Government should know when the fuel prices are increased in this manner how a large percentage of low income earning families, especially the less-privileged people who have no proper income face immense financial difficulties to carry on their day today activities. “Increasing fuel prices will affect transport sectors
including passenger services, vegetable and fish transporters as well as other goods transporters,” he said.
Premadasa said as a result the consumers will have to bear additional expenses to fulfill their day today needs. The SJB Leader further said when there is no proper economic management in the Government in the country citizens will have to suffer.
He said even a child knows when the prices of commodity items in the world market reduces, our country too follow the suit and reduce the prices of such commodity items for the benefit of people. SJB MP Mujibar Rahaman inquired how the Government is increasing the price of fuel when Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa is not in the country.
“Normally price increases should be done in consultation with the Finance Minister who is responsible for financial matters,” he said. He said it is not ethical the prices of fuel increased at midnight and also the ‘Yugadanavi’ agreement was also signed after midnight. He said there is no transparency when signing agreements at midnight.
State Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka also expressed concern over the Government’s economic polices and said the Government should have proper economic plans to develop the country for the sake of future generation.
