Container truck crash disrupts train services on main line

A container truck loaded with fertilizer collided with a train running from Polgahawela to Ratmalana on the main line at the rail crossing in Wilwatta area, Mirigama yesterday morning (9).

No injuries were reported. But the accident caused disruptions to the morning commuter train services.

It is reported that the container truck entered the railway track carelessly while the railway crossing was closed. The trains running on the main line was halted temporarily due to the accident. Both the container truck and the train have sustained damages. Police are investigating the incident.

Trains running on the main line was disrupted due to the accident that occurred yesterday morning (9) at the Wilwatta railway crossing in Mirigama.

As of yesterday evening, both tracks of the double track was cleared for trains and the Railways Department engaged in making the 12 parked trains scheduled to run after the accident to run on the single track.

The Railways Department said the loss due to this accident had not been calculated yet and said trains may be delayed due to this. Traffic movement from Pasyala junction towards Mirigama and towards the highway entrance was also stopped and it was rectified by afternoon and the railway line is being repaired and it could be restored soon, a Railways Department spokesman said.
