UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena stated that the country, which was ravaged by fraud, needs to be re-established with truth and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has plans to do so.
He said that the present regime has plunged the country into a catastrophe and that a national election that can bring about national change is needed to rebuild the country from this catastrophe.
Abeywardena expressed these views at a meeting held with activists from the Akmeemana electorate regarding the reorganization work of the party.
“We are planning to hold a protest on January 25. Leaders of all Political Parties have been invited to the event. Ranil Wickremesinghe and the United National Party have presented a national programme for the country, and it has been decided to go ahead with that national programme. The government says all the current issues will change in due course. But they have no plan for that. Only the UNP has a plan for that”, he added.
He further added that Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the need seek International Monetary Fund assistance and as the chairman of the Party, he further explained it. “The government does not want to go to the International Monetary Fund because they cannot act the way they want if they go to the IMF. You can’t take money to provide food and do other things with it. In 1977 when J. R Jayewardene took over the government, he went to the International Monetary Fund and made Sri Lanka self-sufficient in rice.Yesterday the government said that rice will be imported from India. A self-sufficient country with rice will have to seek assistance from other countries now. We must think of a way to rebuild the country,”he said.
He added that as the government paid its debts on the 18th, the situation will not improve, but the situation will deteriorate further.
