Court of Appeal issues arrest warrant for Gnanasara Thera

The Court of Appeal today (29) issued a warrant for the arrest of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, ordering that he be produced before court on October 1.

The warrant was issued after Gnanasara Thera failed to appear before court when a motion filed by the Attorney General was taken up today.

The Attorney General has sought an order from the Court of Appeal to enforce the prison sentence imposed on Gnanasara Thera, following the revocation of the presidential pardon previously granted to him.

The motion was taken up before a Court of Appeal bench comprising Justices Mayadunne Corea and Lakmali Karunanayake.

When the matter was initially taken up, President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda, appearing for Gnanasara Thera, informed the court that his client was resting due to an illness and requested additional time to study the Attorney General’s motion and make submissions.

However, State Counsel Sajith Bandara, appearing for the Attorney General, pointed out that the matter concerned a criminal case and requested that a warrant be issued if the accused failed to appear before court.

The proceedings were subsequently adjourned for a short period following a request by Gnanasara Thera’s counsel for additional time to study the motion.

When the matter was taken up again, the Court of Appeal issued the arrest warrant and ordered that Gnanasara Thera be produced before court on October 1. (Newswire)
