The Court-of-Appeal (CoA) will today (Friday) take up the case of ousted Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) President Rizly Illyas, who is seeking justice through his Lawyers after he was suspended from office by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe last week.

The CoA, after hearing the Affidavit of Illyas, has sent notice to the Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, Sports Ministry Secretary Anuradha Wijayakoon and Director General Department of the Sports Development Dr. Amal Edirisuriya.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of SLR, SSP Nizam Jamaldeen, in a letter to the Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, has questioned the nature of suspension of SLR President Illyas, as the “Minister in charge of sports has not been vested with the power to suspend an individual member of an Association in as much as no such power has being vested with the Minister by the Sports Law Act 1972 as amended”.

Jamaldeen in his letter to the Sports Minister further adds: “We are advised that according to the Constitution of the Sri Lanka Rugby the power to suspend any Affiliated Member, Club, Player, any other Organisation or person or to impose any appropriate punishment for any infringement of the Constitution or any conduct which, in the opinion of the Council, is prejudicial to the interests of the Sri Lanka Rugby is solely vested with the Sri Lanka Rugby Council.”
