Court orders SLFP to appoint General Secretary at Central Committee
The Colombo District Court yesterday refused to issue an injunction preventing the implementation of Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s (SLFP) decision to expel its General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara from the party.
The Colombo District Court also issued an injunction against Sarath Ekanayake, who was appointed as the new SLFP General Secretary after Dayasiri Jayasekara’s expulsion, from serving as the General Secretary of SLFP and pointed out that the position of General Secretary should be appointed by the Party Central Committee.
The orders were delivered by Colombo Chief Judge Sandun Withana, after considering a case filed by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara challenging SLFP Leader former President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to expel him from the party. The District Judge also pointed out that the position of General Secretary of the SLFP will remain vacant until someone is appointed by the party’s Central Committee and although the chairman has the power to temporarily suspend Party membership, the process of expulsion from the Party should also take place according to the provisions of the Party Constitution.
When the case was taken up yesterday both plaintiff and defence parties appeared before the court and they produced lengthy submissions over the matter.
