Court recalls warrant against Aravinda de Silva and wife

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday (16) ordered that the warrant issued against former cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife be recalled.

The couple had stood surety for Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake, wife of the late SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena, in connection with the Airbus bribery case involving an alleged USD 2 million payment.

The warrant had been issued earlier in the day by Magistrate Pasan Amarasena after the couple failed to appear before court to explain why their bail obligations should not be confiscated. 

They were required to present submissions as sureties but did not attend the hearing.

Later, lawyers representing the couple informed the court that they were unable to appear due to funeral rites of their mother. On that basis, the Magistrate ordered the withdrawal of the warrants.

Aravinda de Silva and his wife had previously stood surety for Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake , who is also the younger sister of Aravinda’s wife. Their absence at Wednesday’s hearing prompted the initial warrant.

The case stems from the Airbus bribery scandal, in which Kapila Chandrasena was named a suspect.

Chandrasena died recently, with his body discovered at Aravinda de Silva’s residence. 

Aravinda testified before the Fort Magistrate’s Court on May 12 regarding the death, followed later by testimony from his wife Priyanga Anushka Wijenayake. (Newswire)
