The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court has rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, seeking an order to prevent her arrest.

The order was issued today (12) after the Magistrate considered the application submitted by Rajapaksa.

She had filed the anticipatory bail application seeking protection against arrest by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in connection with an investigation into the Siriliya Saviya account.

The application was previously taken up before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on October 6, during which the court issued notices directing the Officer-in-Charge of the FCID to appear before court today (12) and submit facts relating to the investigation.

Following consideration of the application, the Magistrate rejected the request for anticipatory bail.

Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Wednesday (07). She was subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded until October 13.

Her arrest is linked to allegations that Rs. 10 million was obtained from the National Savings Bank (NSB) through the Siriliya Saviya organisation, purportedly to purchase a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.

However, investigators allege that the CT scanner was never provided and that the funds were misappropriated. Rajapaksa is accused of corruption involving the alleged misappropriation of public funds, along with offences under the Public Property Act. (Newswire)
