Today, the writ application bearing No. 148/22 filed by the SLR was taken for support. The President Counsel supported the matter and informed the Court that the said Gazette Notification was issued without any legal basis.

The Court decided to issue an interim order suspending the Purported Gazette Notification issued on 01.04.22 by former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa & stated that the WPRFU (western province) needs to appeal before the Sports Minister on there voting rights.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily News, Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) President Rizly Illyaz said, “We the SLR do not hold any grudges. We are there to work for the betterment of the sport we all love. But Unfortunately, undue influence by certain individuals with vested interests who had misled the Minister created this uncalled-for decision. I am happy that ultimately, sports is the winner.”

The Rugby fraternity will wonder who the parties with vested interest are. Faisz Musthapha (PC), Panduka Keerthinanda (AAL), and Keerthi Tillekaratne (AAL), instructed by Sanjeewa Kaluarchchi (AAL), appeared for the SLR and its President.

ASG Sumathi Dharmawardana (PC) appeared on behalf of the respondent Attorney General’s Department.
