CR in hard-fought 28-23 win over CH

CR and FC earned a hard fought 28 points (4 tries, one conversion and 2 penalties) to 23 (2 tries, 2 conversion, 3 penalties) win over CH and FC to retain the Hadji Omar Trophy in their inter club Rugby encounter played for the Nippon Paint Sri Lanka Rugby Major League Tournament at Longden Place yesterday.

Even though the Red jerseyed men manged to win, it was a nerve tingling game until the final whistle where the the deficit was mere 5 points. Eventually, the home team had to fight tooth and nail to notch up their fourth straight win and to remain unbeaten.

After a scrappy ten minutes if play in the first half, CR broke the shackles through fly half Thenuka Nanayakkara who fired a 10 metre kick after CH player was penalized for dangerous play which made CR to lead 3-0.

With this scoring both team fought hard used their three quarters immensely but the Gymkhana lads missed out few productive chances which went a begging due to basic mistakes.

CR capitalising on these chances used their backs to run the ball making some teasing moves. In the 23 minute CH full back Hirusha Nethmina equalled the score line with penalty after CR player was penalised for high tackle.

Three minutes later off maul CR number 8 Lasindu Karunathilaka barged over to plant a try by left corner flag which Thenuka fluffed the conversion. In the 41 minute, the home team increased their lead further through try scored by their centre three quarter Randy Silva which winger Yasas Kavidu failed to add extra points.

On the stroke of the half time CH hooker Prasad Madushanka bisected the rivals defence to score mid left which Hirusha added the extra points to go 13-10 at lemons.

After the trun around it was ding dong battle for supremacy as both sides opted to run the ball through their backs. With some anxious moments winners added 15 points to their total while The losers scored 13 more points.

For CR Centre Manilka Ruberu and hooker Amith Gunasinghe scored and Thenuka Nanayakkara goaled a try while putting over the penalties while CH fly half Dinesh Silva planted the try which full back Hirusha Nethmina goaled and converted the penalty for losers.
