Customs seize 4.5 Mn cigarettes
Sri Lanka Custom officers yesterday (11) seized 4.5 million Manchester cigarette sticks worth Rs. 110 million which was illegally imported to Sri Lanka from India, declared to the Customs officials as cotton fabric and plastic buttons, Director of Customs Seevali Arukgoda said.
This cigarette stock which had been brought to Colombo Port in a container from India was seized according to information received from Indian Customs officials.
Arukgoda further said that this container was imported by an importer in Wattala and it did not contain cotton fabric or plastic buttons. He also mentioned that if this cigarette stock was not seized, the Government would have lost revenue amounting to Rs. 316 million.
Two persons who came to release this container have been arrested by Customs officials and the Customs intelligence officers are conducting further investigations into the matter.
