Customs seize two containers with beedi leaves

Sri Lanka Customs seized two containers with 11.460 kgs of beedi leaves labled as coriander and brought to Sri Lanka illegally which was sent from India. Although Rs.70 million should be charged for it, due to the fact that they were imported as coriander, the amount of tax charged was only Rs.300,000.

The minister further said that since the arrest, a well-known businessman has been exerting pressure for the release of these containers. He emphasised that the investigation will be handed over to the Bribery Commission. The Minister said that security for Customs officials will be ensured as much as possible. He said auctions held in the Customs Department will be open to anybody and said that the system is being prepared to give an opportunity to participate in the relevant auctions.
