Customs to impose maximum penalties for smuggling of gold, electronic items

Sri Lanka Customs has taken steps to impose maximum penalties on smugglers involved in smuggling restricted items that include gold, electronic items and other valuable items.

Customs have decided to impose maximum penalties on anybody smuggling over 100 grams of gold as well as substantial quantities of restricted items including mobile phones, according to Customs.

A senior Customs official said that required measures are in the process of being taken in order to counter the escalating revenue losses incurred.

Sri Lanka Customs had been able to collect Rs. 760 billion in revenue for this year (2023) till now and is forecasted to surpass Rs. 925 billion in total Customs revenue for this entire year (2023).

Anybody caught importing and smuggling in restricted valuable items to the country such as gold, electronic items and other valuable items may face fines up to three times the value of the goods or a Rs. 100,000 penalty, according to Customs.
