Many Christians do not forget to keep green fresh Christmas trees at their homes during this season as they believe that the aroma of fresh Christmas trees give the living Christmas spirit and it brings luck, happiness and joy to their lives.
The popular fresh Christmas tree sales area near Havelock Park, Thimbirigasyaya commenced sales yesterday. The area is open from 6 am continuously until Christmas day on December 25.
Vendors transport fresh trees to Colombo from distant areas such as Nuwaraeliya, Bandarawela, Diyatalawa and Talawakelle. Leading tree seller R. I. Wijesuriya from Bandarawela said Christmas trees are made from cypress plants and branches of cypress trees.
R. Gamini said the cypress trees are grown in thick jungles and the trees are tall and straight and has needle shaped leaves. Fresh christmas trees are also sold in Kandy, Galle,Nugegoda, Dehiwala,Mt. Lavinia, Wellawatta, Bambalapitiya, Ja-ela, Wattala and Negombo.
A long standing Christmas tree seller T.B. Wijesundara said they sell over 40,000 trees to buyers in the four days prior to December 25.
Tree seller Sumanapala Perera said the main obstacle is that they have to get the permission from the Forest Department and the area Divisional Secretariats and the transportation of trees are also done with Police permission.
