Dairy farms to be registered

0 2

The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has decided to declare January-2024 as the month of Livestock Development and register all dairy farms countrywide under the Ministry.

Kurunegala District Assistant Director of Agriculture A.M.Jayasekara speaking at a meeting of dairy farmers in the Kurunegala district said there are nearly 290,592 animal farms in the country but only 58,137 dairy farms have been registered with the Ministry.

The majority of those registered are dairy farms that produce nearly 100 litres of milk per day. Consequently, these unregistered dairy farm owners have failed to obtain the subsidies and the other incentives offered to the dairy farmers by the Government. The ministry has not been able to prepare records with true and accurate data of animal farms countrywide as most of the dairy farms are not registered with the ministry, he said.

To overcome this issue, Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Livestock Development Unit of the Agricultural Ministry to take steps to register all dairy farms countrywide. It is a compulsory requirement for dairy farmers to get registered with the ministry from January, he said.
