Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has warned that anyone responsible for damaging Metro buses will face serious legal action for damaging public property.
“Whoever is responsible, whether drivers or owners, will have to face serious legal action for damaging public property belonging to the people of Sri Lanka,” Rathnayake said.
Speaking to the media, the minister said around 100 Metro buses are currently in operation and that most private buses have not caused any problems for the service.
“Some 100 Metro buses are in operation, and a majority of private buses have caused no difficulty to them. Only a few have caused incidents. Therefore, I won’t classify this as an issue caused by private bus owners,” he said.
Rathnayake urged those responsible for the incidents to refrain from damaging the buses and adapt to the new transport programme, which he said has received wide public acceptance.
He also said the Metro bus service would be opened to private-sector participation within a year. (Newswire)
