Damsath Peiris in action
Promising Damsath Peiris stole the limelight with a stunning performance at the 108th National Tennis Championships, which continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
The schoolboy from Ananda College and the bottom seed, rallied around magnificently to topple the top seed and the favourite Yudheerya Atapattu in straight sets in the Boys’ Under-12 Singles final encounter.
Yudheerya, of course, made a determined effort to stretch the final into a three-setter as he surrendered following an exciting tiebreaker 7-6 after Damsath had cruised to a convincing 6-3 victory in the opening set.
Meanwhile, the quarter-final line-up of the Men’s Singles and the Women’s Singles were completed with all favourites making it to the last four with comfortable victories.
Fifth seed Sharmal Dissanayake making a comeback, set up a semi-final date with the top seed Ashen Silva while the bottom seed Apna Perera will face third seed Chathurya Nilaweera in the second semi-final.
In the Women’ Singles quarter-finals Dinara de Silva was impressive as she forced the third seed Janali Manamperi to retire during the second set and meet the number one Saajida Razick in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, fifth seed Anjalika Kurera created an upset as she defeated the fourth seed Rukshika Wijesooriya 7-5, 6-2 and set up a semi-final clash against the bottom seed Dinethya Dharmaratne.
