De Kock’s 174 leads Proteas to 149-run win

Opener Quinton de Kock stroked a masterful 174 as South Africa recorded a comprehensive 149-run win over Bangladesh in their Cricket World Cup match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai yesterday.

Bangladesh, chasing a target of 383, managed to reach 233 in 46.4 overs. with all-rounder Mahmudullah being the only successful batsman, scoring 111 in 111 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes. Unfortunately, none of the other players made useful contributions to bridge the gap. Gerard Coetzee continued South Africa’s winning momentum by taking 3 for 62, while Marco Jansen, Lizaad Williams and Kagiso Rabada shared two wickets each.

Quinton de Kock who set a record for the highest runs by a wicketkeeper at the World Cup, was named the Man of the Match. With this victory, South Africa climbed to the second position on the points table with 8 points, tying with New Zealand, but with a superior run rate. India retains the first place with an unbeaten record and 10 points from five wins.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, with experienced Quinton de Kock dominating the batting from the beginning to build up a huge total once again.

This was the third ton from de Kock who had two early centuries against Sri Lanka and Australia in this World Cup. This time he scored his second-best ODI innings of 174 in 140 balls with 15 fours and 7 sixes (his highest score is 178). The stylish left-hander having more IPL experience got full advantage to come up in the World Cup. He is the highest run scorer with 407 followed by Virat Kohli with 354 runs. Quinton set up a new batting record of 174 in Mumbai surpassing the previous record of 151 set by Sri Lanka master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya in 1997.

Skipper Aiden Markram hit 60 in 69 balls with 7 fours while last game’s centurion Heinrich Klaasen, once again hit an explosive knock of 90 in just 47 balls with 2 fours and 8 sixes. These performances led South Africa to a commanding total of 382 for 5 wickets within their allotted 50 overs.

Bangladesh bowlers were punished by South African batters while Nasum Ahmed took 2 for 67 in his six overs spell.

Australia will meet the Netherlands today (25) at Delhi followed by Sri Lanka and England match at Bangalore tomorrow (26).
