Death of domestic: Rishad’s wife, two others arrested

The wife of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rishad Bathiudeen (46), his Father-in-Law (70), and another person (64) from Dayagama, were arrested by the Police yesterday in connection with the death of a 16-year old girl, who had been a domestic servant at the residence of the ex-Minister.

They have been arrested for the offences of human trafficking and cruelty to children.

The suspect from Dayagama had been the broker, who brought the girl to the ex-Minister’s residence in Colombo.

The Borella Police Children and Women’s Bureau and the Colombo South Divisional Crime Detective Bureau are conducting further investigations into the case. The Police had recorded about 20 statements as of yesterday.

“The investigation team collected scientific, circumstantial and technical evidence.

The team also considered the post-mortem report,” Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said.

The suspects were to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday under the Criminal Procedure Code. The Police were seeking to obtain a 72-hour detention order on them for further investigations.
