Kalutara High Court Judge Pradeep Abhayaratne on Thursday (7) sentenced two of the accused with the death penalty for murdering a person using sharp weapons, in a house where a funeral was held 16 years ago.
The death penalty was awarded to Gamage Don Ruwan Manjula (47) residing at Bopitiya East, Matugama and Tantri Rohana Wasantha (45) residing at Rupasingha Mawatha, Pothupitiya, Wadduwa.
Mohomadurage Gamini Wijewardene (61) residing at Sarananda Mawatha, Matugama, Narawila, was murdered on or around April 18, 2007, in a funeral home located at Sarananda Mawatha, Bopitiya in the Matugama Police Domain.
The murdered person was killed due to an argument with a group of people who were there when he went to a funeral home with his two sons. At the time, the two sons were able to escape by running away.
Matugama Police had arrested 12 suspects in connection with this murder, out of which 10 defendants were acquitted and the court sentenced the first and eighth defendants with the death penalty.
