Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told Parliament yesterday that if there is a request or demand to investigate the death sentence imposed on Ven. Talduwe Somarama Thera, the Government can grant that request.

The Minister said that capital punishment is normally monitored by physicians and the physician has to certify that the person has passed away.

The Minister was replying to the question raised by SJB MP Buddhika Pathirana who queried regarding the non-issuance of a death certificate after the execution of Ven. Talduwe Somarama Thera which was carried out when he was a layman.

He also said that it would be important for those who study history if a death certificate had been issued in relation to that incident. The Minister stated that the death penalty has not been carried out in this country for the last 49 years and 31 people were executed in the Bogambara Prison from 1959 to 1975.

The Minister also said that the death penalty was not carried out in this country after 1975.
