Seven people have died due to drowning on Sunday (23) alone after going to bathe or swim in the ocean or inland waters, Police said.
These deaths have been reported from Veyangoda, Negombo, Panadura South, Kaduwela and Wattala Police areas.
A youth who was swimming in the seas off Wattala Dikowita drowned and four other youths who were with him were rescued after they were caught in strong currents, the Police said.
The deceased is a 23-year-old man, a resident of Mulleriyawa, Udulampala.
Meanwhile a 61-year-old woman drowned while swimming in the Kelani River in front of the Kaduwela Paththini Devalaya. Kaduwela Police stated that she is a resident of Kaduwela Walankade. Meanwhile, a person who was swimming in Dee-ella Oya in Veyangoda also drowned yesterday. Veyangoda Police said that the deceased is a 31-years-old man, a resident of Pattigoda, Veyangoda.
Meanwhile, a schoolboy drowned yesterday while swimming in the sea in front of Panadura Nalluruwa Army Technical Force Camp.
Panadura South Police say that the student is a 17-year-old resident of Panadura.
Also three employees working in a factory in the Katunayake Investment Development Zone also drowned after going swimming in the seas off the Browns Beach Park in Eththukala. They are residents of Chunnagam, Koslanda and Diagama and are in their early twenties.
