Decrease in overall crimes after ‘Yukthiya’ operation – DIG

The head of the Police Crimes Investigation Division DIG Kalinga Jayasinghe says an 11 percent reduction in crimes has been reported in the country after starting the ‘Yukthiya’ operation to curb drug trafficking and other crimes.

Addressing the media on Wednesday (10) Jayasinghe noted that drug trafficking and narcotic drug use are behind a majority of crimes in the country and the arrest of a large number of drug sellers and seizure of drugs have contributed to the reduction in crimes.

He said that compared to last year, in the same period following the Yukthiya operation, crimes in the Western Province have decreased by 25 percent and crimes in the Southern Province by 36 percent.

The Deputy Inspector General further said that murders have decreased by 40 percent, rape by 60 percent, house breaking by 4 percent, robberies by 40 percent, and reports of minor crimes have also has decreased.

DIG Jayasinghe said that there have been reports regarding the non-acceptance of complaints made to the Police. He said added disciplinary measures will be taken against officers not accepting complaints.
