In a remarkable comeback, 23-year-old Kyle Abeysinghe has clinched the title of National Swimming Champion at the Sri Lanka Senior National Swimming Championship in Short Course in Kandy, marking a victorious return to competitive swimming after a four-year lapse due to illness.

Abeysinghe, who faced a setback in his swimming journey due to injury, emerged triumphant by securing five individual gold medals in the 50m, 100m, 200m Freestyle, and 100m and 200m Individual Medley. Additionally, he contributed to five relay victories for the victorious Killer Whale Aquatics, which won third consecutive Senior National Championship title, including a National Record-breaking performance in the 4x50m Medley Relay alongside teammates Vinul Senanayake, Anusara Abeygoonawardane, and Olympian Matthew Abeysinghe.

Expressing his joy, Kyle shared, “It feels really good to be back in the water among the fastest swimmers in Sri Lanka. The victory is gratifying.”

Drawing on his experience, Kyle emphasized the significance of adaptability in overcoming challenges during the tournament. Having previously raced in Hillwood College pool, Kandy as a teenager, he felt a sense of familiarity with the pool, the environment, and what to expect.

For Kyle, representing Sri Lanka is a profound honour, and the Lion Flag draped over his shoulders during the victory is a great feeling.

While personal achievements are cherished, he holds two silver medals (50 and 100m Freestyle) in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas in 2017 as his highest accomplishments.

Looking ahead, Kyle aspires to participate in the World Championships in Doha, Qatar in February, and the forthcoming Olympic Games in Paris this year.

Beyond his individual success, Kyle takes pride in the consistent victory of the Killer Whales Aquatics (KWA) club in the Senior National Short Course Swimming Championship for the third consecutive year. He attributes his success to the legacy of excellence and the shared goal of high performance established by his father and Head Coach, Manoj Abeysinghe.

Reflecting on the role of his coach, Kyle highlighted the coach’s transition from instructor to mentor, emphasizing the importance of trust and shared goals in their relationship.

Praising his coach’s commitment to sportsmanship, Kyle considers it a significant factor in his success. The coach’s vast knowledge and experience have left a lasting impact on Kyle’s character as both an athlete and a person.

Recalling the championship, Kyle cherished the memorable moments of his teammates’ races, witnessing their success and growth with pride.

In conclusion Kyle offered advice to aspiring swimmers, encouraging them to work hard, stay goal-oriented, and not be afraid to make sacrifices for greatness. He stressed the importance of pushing oneself beyond limits and taking care of both physical and mental well-being.

Kyle Abeysinghe’s journey to becoming the National Swimming Champion is a story of guts and glory that will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of swimmers in Sri Lanka.
