A zebra at the Dehiwala National Zoological Gardens is recovering well and has resumed eating normally following a successful emergency surgery to remove an obstruction from its digestive tract.

The Department of National Zoological Gardens, providing an update on the animal’s condition, confirmed that the zebra is making a rapid recovery under veterinary care.

According to the Department, the zebra had been showing signs of illness since September 29, prompting veterinary officers to conduct laboratory tests and a scan.

The examinations revealed an obstruction in the animal’s digestive tract, requiring urgent surgical intervention.

Accordingly, a special emergency surgery was performed on October 9, with the participation of veterinary officers and staff of the Department of National Zoological Gardens.

The procedure was conducted under the guidance and participation of Dr. Dammika Perera, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Peradeniya, who specialises in equine species.

The surgery continued for several hours until the early hours of the following morning, during which veterinary surgeons successfully removed a mass of undigested food that had caused the obstruction.

Following the procedure, the zebra was kept under close veterinary supervision for several days.

The Department has now confirmed that the animal is recovering well and has resumed its usual feeding habits.

The Department of National Zoological Gardens also expressed appreciation to Dr. Dammika Perera, veterinary surgeon Dr. Hasitha Rupathunga, the Dehiwala Zoo Veterinary Hospital staff and animal care teams for their contributions to the successful surgery and the zebra’s recovery.
