Sri Lanka has recorded 68,672 dengue cases so far this year, according to data released by the National Dengue Control Unit, as of July 12.

The Western Province continues to bear the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for 36,118 cases (52.6%), with Gampaha (14,112) and Colombo (13,471) districts reporting the highest numbers.

The Southern Province follows with 10,765 cases, while Sabaragamuwa (5,807) and Central Province (5,681) also remain heavily affected.

Monthly figures show a sharp rise in recent weeks, with June recording 21,538 cases and July already reporting 13,293 cases. Earlier months saw lower numbers, including May (8,590), April (5,651), and March (6,013).

The outbreak has claimed 47 lives this year, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%. Authorities have identified 175 high‑risk MOH areas during Week 27, with an average of 2,677 new cases per week.

District‑level data highlights the spread beyond the Western Province, with Matara (4,885), Kalutara (4,600), Kandy (4,061), and Ratnapura (3,964) among the hardest hit.

Smaller districts such as Mannar (74), Kilinochchi (47), and Mullaitivu (43) reported comparatively fewer cases.

Health officials continue to urge intensified community participation in mosquito control measures as the epidemic shows no signs of slowing. (Newswire)
