Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and Sri Sumangala College, Kandy took the lead in the latest points table after last week’s fixtures in the Inter-Schools ‘B’ Division League Rugby Tournament.

The Devans are currently heading Group-1 with the maximum points having made it three wins from three outings after they edged out Lumbini MV 15-14 in a thrilling encounter on their home grounds.

Zahira College are also unbeaten and are making a strong claim to come on top of Group-1 and play in the Super Round stage having recorded back-to-back bonus-point victories.

The Zahirians powered their way to another emphatic 29-7 victory against St. Aloysius’ College, Galle while scoring over five tries in a match for the second time this season.

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa and Mahanama College are the other teams competing in Group-2 but Maliyadeva and Zahira have emerged as the real contenders to top this group.

Meanwhile, Sri Sumangala College have taken a commanding lead in Group-2 after having recorded three impressive victories from their four matches played so far.

The Sumangalians have piled up an aggregate of more than 150 points from their four outings and have already collected five bonus points, which could be crucial at the end of the league.

Last week, Sri Sumangala had the satisfaction of recording another comfortable 36-10 victory against Ananda College at the Air Force Grounds in Ratmalana.

Sri Sumangala are challenged by two former ‘A’ Division teams D. S. Senanayake College and Thurstan College with both having collected 12 points each in Group-2.

Last week, D. S. Senanayake registered their second successive victory when they defeated Thurstan 24-7, which also helped them to retain the Gratiaen Gunawardhana Challenge Trophy for another year.

Despite that setback, Thurstan are still in contention to reach the top two while currently occupying the third place in this group with the remaining two games set to decide their fate.

Meanwhile, St. Benedict’s College and St. Sylvester’s College figured in the first drawn encounter in the ‘B’ Division League Tournament but both teams seem to have a very little chance of finishing among the top two teams in Group-2.
