New Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Miyon Lee said her country would initiate new development projects in Sri Lanka, while ensuring early completion of ongoing projects.

Ambassador Miyon Lee said this in response to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena’s appeal to resume ongoing infrastructure development projects that were halted due to the economic crisis and the issue of debt restructuring.

The new South Korean Ambassador, who called on the Prime Minister at Temple Trees on Monday (25), said her country will also consider the request made by the Prime Minister to assist projects on water treatment, sanitation, sewage disposal systems and dry zone agriculture.

The Prime Minister said that Korea now has the opportunity to invest in new sectors such as production of agricultural machinery, medicine and medical equipment, renewable energy and the fisheries sector.

Ambassador Miyon Lee added she would also work on enhancing cultural and religious ties, educational exchanges and people-to-people relationship. She said there are 25,000 Sri Lankans currently working in Korea, with another 7,000 to be added this year.

The Prime Minister urged her to look into the possibility of recruiting Sri Lankans under the seasonal agricultural workers scheme too, to which the Ambassador assured her government would consider the request.
