Six devotees fainted on September 12 at the Nallur Kandasamy Temple in Jaffna due to a stampede by the devotees who had come for the special seven-night poojas.

As the ambulances that came to take the unconscious devotees could not reach the location, the lives of the unconscious devotees were in serious danger.

Police immediately went to the spot and broke the roadblocks erected by the temple management authority and rescued the unconscious evotees.Personnel of the medical and first aid institutes have given basic treatment to that group and brought them back to a state of recovery.

Later, two of them were taken to hospital and the other four recovered from basic first aid treatment. After this incident, a large number of shocked devotees went without participating in the poojas.

The management authority of Nallur temple along with Jaffna Municipality has used a large number of iron gates and road barriers to restrict devotees to the temple and due to the large number of devotees participating in the temple festival, they got stuck in these safety gates and could not breathe which resulted in this unfortunate incident taking place.

Devotees have requested the temple management to immediately put the road barriers and safety fences in an orderly manner and to remove the unnecessary barriers.

On the last few days of Nallur temple, special poojas are held, so a large number of devotees participate in the poojas held on those days.

By the time the devotees became unconscious, there were about 200,000 devotees inside the temple.
