Digitising public sector transport, the best way to curb corruption – Minister
Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana stated that the only way to stop theft, irregularities, corruption and fraud in all public sector institutions is to digitise the public sector.
He stated this in response to a question raised by a journalist at the Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department regarding the allegations made by passengers that there are no buses for passengers to travel at night yesterday.
Under the Indian loan scheme, 500 buses have been put into operation in rural areas and out of the 400 buses that are being renovated, 175 buses have been put into operation so far.
But all these activities can be done if the SLTB receives an income from the passenger tickets, and the income received by the SLTB is not being received properly due to the irregularities committed by some.
To overcome this, several journeys were run between Matara, Galle and Makumbura with tickets without conductors on the highway, and the daily income was about 5-6 lakhs. The Minister pointed out that it has been revealed that the Government is not getting money for those journeys by issuing tickets.
He said that strict action will be taken in connection with misappropriation of public funds and theft by printing fake tickets and transporting passengers and judicial action will be taken by the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police. He further mentioned here that the best action that can be taken to prevent theft and corruption in the public sector is to digitise all institutions owned by the public sector and by issuing e-tickets to passengers like other countries in the world, it will be possible to provide a very good bus service to the people.
