Dinara de Silva from St Bridget’s Convent and Apna Perera, a former Ananda College tennis player, emerged victorious in the Women’s Open and Men’s Open categories, respectively, at the annual Queen’s Club Tennis Championship held at Queen’s Club Tennis courts last week.
In the Women’s Open final, Dinara de Silva defeated Zajida Razick with a score of 6-4 and 6-3. She showcased her skills in the earlier rounds, overcoming Hasali Gajaba 6-1 and 6-3 in the semi-final and Oneli Samarawickrama with a convincing 6-1 and 6-0 victory in the quarter-final.
Apna Perera, the former Ananda College player, secured the Men’s Open title by defeating Chathurya Nilaweera with a clean sweep of 3-0 (6-1, 6-1, and 6-1). In the semi-final, Perera triumphed over Lisal Goonetileke with a score of 2-0 (6-2 and 6-2), and in the quarter-final, he beat Luka Knese by 3-0 (6-3, 7-5, and 6-2).
The finals for other age groups in the Queen’s Club Tennis Championship are yet to take place, promising more thrilling tennis action in the coming rounds.(S.J.)
