Dinara, Anjalika beat top seeds
Dinara de Silva and Anjalika Kurera set up a final showdown in the Women’s Open Singles by recording stunning victories at the 10th National Tennis Championships, continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
Dinara, the schoolgirl from St. Bridget’s Convent and ranked number eight, produced a giant-killing performance to topple the top seed Saajida Razick in a thrilling semi-final encounter.
Anjalika, another schoolgirl from Ave Maria Convent, Negombo and ranked number five, also had the satisfaction of overcoming a seeded player as she knocked-out the bottom seed Dinethya Dharmaratne in a three-setter.
Meanwhile, third seed Chathurya Nilaweera powered his way to the Men’s Singles final with an upset win over the bottom seed Apna Perera in the semi-finals.
He will meet Ashen Silva in Sunday’s final after the top seed had the better of the injured Sharmal Dissanayake who retired during the first with the scores tied at 2-2.
In addition, Methwan Wijemanne of Royal College completed a triple crown as he followed up his success in the Boys’ Under-16 Singles and Doubles by winning the Boys’ Under-18 Doubles final with his partner Vichinthya Nilaweera.

(Men’s Singles semi-finals): Chathurya Nilaweera beat Apna Perera 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Ashen Silva beat Sharmal Dissanayake 2-2 (Ret). (Girls’ Under-18 Doubles final): Nesangi Hemakumara and Vishmi Serasinghe beat Nelini Jayasuriya and Anitra Dharmaratne 6-2, 6-0. (Women’s Singles semi-finals): Anjalika Kurera beat Dinethya Dharmaratne 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Dinara de Silva beat Saajida Razick 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. (Boys’ Under-18 Doubles final): Vichinthya Nilaweera and Methvan Wijemanne beat Matheesha Nettasinghe and Ransath Peiris 6-4, 6-2.
