Sri Lanka’s golden boy Dinesh Priyantha Herath said their strenuous training under difficult conditions paved the way to their success at the 16th Tokyo Paralympics in Japan.

Herath won a Gold Medal with a record breaking effort of 67.79m in the Men’s javelin throw F46 event while Samitha Dulan secured the Bronze Medal in the Men’s javelin throw F44 event.

This was the first time Sri Lankan Para Athletes had won two medals at the Paralympics, which paved the way for them to finish in 57th place in the final medals table.

“Despite the pandemic we continued our training sessions regularly under the guidance of our Coach Pradeep Nishantha,” Herath revealed shortly after they arrived from Tokyo to a red carpet welcome on Tuesday.

“I was fully confident going into the Tokyo Games and because of that I was able to produce my best performance in my pet event,” Herath elaborated.

The flag-bearer of the Sri Lankan contingent also expressed his gratitude to the Sports Ministry, National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Army for their kind gesture and assistance at various occasions.

“The Sports Ministry, Sri Lanka Army and the National Paralympic Committee always gave me their fullest support to reach this level,” Herath added.

The Sri Lankan war veteran does not want to stop at this point and he is determined to further improve on his world record in the next event.

“My next target is the 2022 Asian Para Games in China and I want to further improve my record and bring glory to Sri Lanka,” Herath concluded.
