The villagers of Kanagar Gramam in the Pottuvil DS Division who were displaced during the war are to be resettled soon on their own soil, after nearly 35 years, on the action taken by Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman, as per the instructions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Several efforts taken by these villagers to get back to their native places after the restoration of peace, had failed. These villagers had staged several protest marches including a fast unto death to get back to their lands.
Governor Thondaman, understanding their situation, took action and on the advice of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, visited Kanagar Gramam along with the MP of the area T. Kalaiarasan. The Divisional Secretary of the area and relevant officials have made arrangements to resettle the villagers.
The clearing of the areas has already commenced on request of MP Kalaiarasan, with the support of local authorities.
The villagers who have hitherto been living in temporary sheds and occupying their relatives’ houses thanked Governor Thondaman for taking constructive actions and solving their problem.
