Three new Bills that will make it easier to get a divorce will be presented to the Parliament next month, Justice Minter Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.
Accordingly, amendments are being made to the Matrimonial Causes Act, the Recognition of Foreign Divorce Judgements Act and the Code of Civil Procedure.
The Minister also mentioned that the outdated laws that currently impose strict restrictions on obtaining a divorce will be radically reformed.
A person who is currently seeking a divorce should present before the Court one of the three facts of adultery with a third party, malicious desertion or impotence during marriage. The Minister said that the responsibility of proving those facts rests on the person requesting the divorce and it is extremely difficult to prove such reasons and some divorce cases drag on for 10 to 20 years and these facts were considered in making amendments to the divorce law.
