Doctor mum on delivering 15-year-old’s baby

A Paediatric surgeon at the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, allegedly, has not reported the birth of a child  to a minor girl, to the Child Protection Authority (CPA). The mother of the newborn is a 15-year-old resident of Rajgama, Bandaragama.

Due to complications caused by the newborn being of low birth weight, it was referred to the Karapitiya Children’s Unit, by a specialist Paediatric surgeon.

As the mother of the newborn was still a minor, the staff of the hospital ward had informed the Judicial Medical Unit of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, and were in the process of informing the CPA, in accordance with the regulations.

However, the Paediatrician who delivered the baby, had told the staff that it was not necessary to take any such action, and later had taken steps to remove the newborn and its mother from the relevant ward.

Later hospital officials informed the CPA about the incident.
