Doctor selling painkillers as intoxicants remanded in Badulla

Badulla Magistrate Nujith De Silva ordered that the doctor employed at the Badulla Hospital, who was arrested by the Police Special Task Force (STF) for being involved in a racket of selling painkillers to drug

addicts including school students, be remanded until tomorrow (17).

The medical officer who was remanded thus was Dr. Thilina Gajanayake.

The Police STF took this doctor into custody on the night of February 14 near the Muthiyangana Temple, Badulla.

He was arrested based on information received by officers of the Special Task Force Passara camp that he was involved in a racket of selling a painkiller drug for intoxication, subsequent to a lengthy investigation. Information from the STF stated that a STF officer posing as a dealer had given an order to this doctor regarding a stock of pain reliever capsules and accordingly the doctor was arrested while handing over the capsules containing an intoxicating drug.

The police said the doctor had 145 such capsules in his car. He had been selling one such capsule at Rs. 250. This capsule is being sold at pharmacies according to doctors’ prescription at a price between Rs. 35to 40 each.

This doctor is a resident of Mailagastenna, Badulla. During investigations it has become apparent that this 43-year-old doctor had been engaged in this racket for quite a while and that students buy these capsules from him in order to get intoxicated. Apart from that, investigations have shown that these capsules are used by people working night jobs as well as drug addicts as an alternative to drugs.

Further investigations have revealed that this doctor runs a medical center in Kanupelella, Badulla and that he sells these capsules to persons who come there as well.

This raid was carried out based on a tip-off received by officers of the STF of the Passara Camp, under the orders and directions of STF Commandant DIG Waruna Jayasundera, under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police Dayaratne and the Commanding Officer of the second camp of the Passara Camp of the STF, IP D. R. M. S. Hemawansha and a team of police officers.
