Don’t give money, give fertilizer, says Adivasi leader

Bibila Rathugala Adivasi leader Suda Vannilaaththo has requested the Government not to handover the fertilizer subsidy money given by the Government to the paddy cultivation in Maha Season, but to give only fertilizer for that money.

The Adivasi community leader says that the fertilizer subsidy money given to some farmers in the area is used for consuming alcohol and gambling. The households are in a dire situation and due to the fact that the fields are cultivated without fertilizing, the agricultural land does not yield a good harvest.

After giving money to some farmers in the agricultural lands of Bibila Rathugala tribal village, they used the money for other needs, he said.

Suda Vannilaattho says that if farmers are provided with both quality chemical and organic fertilizers for the amount of subsidy, they can get a good harvest from farming. He said that if not, the farmlands would be destroyed.

The Ministry of Agriculture has recently credited an amount of one billion rupees to the farmers’ accounts and the Adivasi community leader requested the Agricultural Service Offices to provide fertilizers to the farmers for that amount.
