COPE Chairman MP Prof. Ranjith Bandara yesterday urged the Opposition not to politicise the workings of the COPE in Parliament.
He also said that it is the responsibility of the Opposition Leader to protect the COPE, which is run as an independent committee, from becoming politicised. Prof. Bandara said this while replying to the accusations made by the Opposition MPs regarding his behaviour when Sri Lanka Cricket was summoned to the COPE, on Tuesday.
“A large group of people who have never participated in the COPE for its entire history participated on Tuesday. MP Madura Vithanage also testified about how I controlled its affairs,” he said.
“There were also three members of the Opposition. They came to this COPE meeting with a different objective. We do not have any ulterior objectives. Please do not politicise the COPE. We did not even mention the name of the Sports Minister there. The Opposition Leader is also responsible for running this as an independent committee,” Prof. Bandara said.
