Double murder suspect dies in Police custody

A suspect arrested in connection with the killing of two people and causing injuries to two others who were travelling in trishaw to a funeral in Talduwa, Avissawella, on September 20 died while under Police custody yesterday.

The deceased is a 21-year-old man named Mahesh Dhananjaya, a resident of Galabalana Kanda, Avissawella Maniyangama.

The suspect had fought with the Police when he was being taken in a Police jeep to find several items related to the case based on details given by the suspect during interrogations.

According to the Police he had strangled a Constable with his handcuffed hands and the other Policemen had been able to save him with much effort.

Later the suspect and the Police Constable injured in the incident had been admitted to hospital, but the suspect had succumbed to injuries.

The Police Constable it is said had regained consciousness after two hours and is receiving treatment.

It is said the shooting attack on the trishaw was directed by Manna Ramesh, an underworld drug trafficker staying in Dubai.

The suspect, involved in the double murder in Talduwa, was arrested by a team of officers from the Special Raid (Colombo) Division of the Police Special Task Force.

On Thursday (12), the Police Special Task Force arrested this suspect along with six grams and 170 milligrams of heroin at the Katuewa junction in Hambantota.

The suspect has been handed over to the Hambantota Police by the Special Task Force. The Avissawella Police took the suspect in connection with the double murder investigation and brought him to Avissawella and detained him for 72 hours with permission from the Magistrate of Avissawella to conduct investigations.

Meanwhile, Police sources said the underworld criminal named Manna Ramesh, made a phone call to a senior Police officer in Avissawella yesterday and threatened him saying “You have killed someone who was like my child. I will do these things to your children too”.
