The Coast Guard yesterday took steps to demolish an illegally built hotel located near the Dehiwala beach, which is said to belong to a person named Shiran Basik, who is allegedly engaged in drug trafficking through his acolytes here, while operating from Dubai.

The Police yesterday provided security to demolish the hotel.

The hotel had been operating despite several previous notices to remove it.

The Police had also arrested two people who obstructed the demolition of this unauthorized construction.

The Criminal Investigation Department’s Illegal Assets Investigation Division had also been conducting an investigation into this hotel. Another hotel adjacent to the beach on Ramakrishna Road, Wellawatta, owned by Shiran Basik, was seized by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division on October 07, 2022.

On October 11 of the same year, the Illegal Assets Investigation Division seized a jeep and a car used by Shiran Basik’s son. The value of those two vehicles was estimated to be over Rs. 30 million.

Intelligence agencies had discovered that Shiran Basik’s son had been nominated for the local authority election from the Colombo district, by a leading political party.

According to the Police Narcotics Bureau, Shiran Basik was a person who was packing drugs for notorious drug trafficker ‘Wele Suda’ earlier and he later became a leading drug dealer. Information from the Narcotics Bureau revealed that there were many drug cases against him and he was acquitted by the Court in all cases except one.

Currently, there is a case against him related to 50 grams of heroin, which was seized in 2015 when Chief Police Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa was in the Police Narcotics Bureau.

Information from the Police Narcotics Bureau stated that he fled to Dubai in 2019 when the indictment was handed over for hearing the case in the High Court.
