A youth who had been under the influence of liquor who attempted to ride on the back of tusker Agbo regularly visiting the Kanumullegama tank area in Thirappane, was injured when the jumbo hit him using one of its limbs. The injured man has been admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Agbo the tusker had been under the treatment of Wildlife Department veterinary surgeons for several fatal gunshot injuries on its front leg for a lengthy period of time and was released to his familiar habitat forest area recently after recovery. The jumbo was known to have been frequenting human habitats of many villages in search of food in the Thirappane area since its release.
Incidentally, when the youth who was under the influence of liquor had moved under the trunk of the jumbo twice without being hurt, and had got the impression that the wild elephant was friendly with him. This made him hang on to the jumbo’s tail and attempted to mount on its back, regardless of the warnings made by several villagers nearby at the time. At this point Agbo had kicked the man with its rear limb, dashing and throwing him away.
